Twitter(現X)で、魔法使いが持つ「杖」について、英語の使い分けが話題になっていたのでメモ。
魔法使いは杖を持つことが多いけれど、杖は英語でstaff、rod、wand、caneなど様々に呼ばれる。
個人的には、スタッフは人丈、ワンドは腕の長さ、ロッドはそれらの中間というイメージ。
ケインは、長さではなく、歩行を補助するという機能で分類されると思っていた。
ためしにダンジョンズ・アンド・ドラゴンズを参照してみると、長さや機能について、もうすこし具体的な説明がされていた。
杖の長さについて、D&D5eでは、スタッフの長さはおよそ5～6フィート(約152.4～182.9cm)、
ロッドはおよそ2～3フィート(約61.0～91.4cm)、ワンドはおおむね15インチ(38.1cm)と設定されている。
ケインは、やはり歩行を補助するための杖。いわゆる仕込み杖は、ソード・ケインといわれることが多いように思う。

「なんか創作に使えるネタねえかな～」とネットをあさっていたら、英語版Wikiの「ペチュニア」のページに、「マヤ人やインカ人は、ペチュニアの香りには冥界の怪物や霊をはらいのける力があると信じていた」という記述を見つけた。*1
ただし「要出典」のタグ付き。
編修履歴をたどってみると、要出典タグが付けられたのは2023年8月。
いくつかの別サイトでは、Wikiの丸写しか、すこし文言を変えただけの文章も見つけた。
エルサレム・ポストの記事でもほぼ同文を載せていて*2、どうやらネットとマスコミによって出典不明な情報が広まりつつあるというのが、現状らしい。
さらにWikiの履歴をさかのぼってみると、少々内容が異なる以前のバージョンでは、2018年5月に出典が付記されている*3。
ただし、出典として示されているURLをたどると、当該文章はその後のページ更新によって削除されてしまったらしい。*4
結局のところ、当該記事の出典は不詳で、2017年6月にWikiに唐突に記載されたのが、初出と思われる。*5

覚え書き。イギリスという国名に「おとぎの国」という意味合いを持たせる表現が、グリム童話にあったと思い、出典を探していた。1810年版の『白雪姫』で、物語の舞台が「天使の国」(エンゲルランド)と呼ばれていて、これがドイツ語としては、英国をさす「エングラント」とほとんど同じとみなせる、と。

ネーミングの参考になるかと、英仏独の人名バージョンを調べたことがある。英語だとアルフレッド、ベンジャミン、エックスレイ(???)、仏語だとアナトール、ベルト、グザヴィエ、独語だとアンナ、ベルタ、クサンティッペとされる。それにしてもエックスレイのしぶとさよ。
この人名バージョン・フォネティックコードを踏まえて、うちのヴィクターの機体名を「MWGS型22号機」にして、1号機アルフレッドから26号機ゾーイまでの兄弟機がいたという設定を生やしたのだった。
神話や伝説に登場するキノコのモンスターについて、ずっと調べていた。
僕は、支部企画などで様々な怪物や精霊を描きたがるタチなんだけど、
そのたびに、各地の神話や伝説などの「古典」をふまえて、
モンスターを造形し、描き出すことが多い。
さいきんキノコのモンスターを描く機会があって、
いつものように神話などにあたったのだけど、
どうもキノコのモンスターが見当たらない。
キノコを神秘の霊薬として食べたり、魔術の材料にしたりという話はある。
妖精がいた痕跡といわれるキノコの輪(フェアリーサークル)の話もある。
しかし、D&Dのマイコニド、ホラー映画「マタンゴ」、FFのフンゴオンゴなど、
近代の作品に登場するキノコのモンスターはいくらでもいるが、
神話伝説由来のキノコのモンスターは、どうもいないらしい。
と思っていたのだけど、見つけた。
奈良県十津川村では、キノコが腐敗すると一本足・一つ目の一本ダタラになるというのだ。
くわえて、コロンビアやベネズエラにはKayeriという怪物の伝説があるらしい。
Kayeriは、キノコに似た帽子のようなものを頭にかぶったモンスターで
巨人もしくは巨獣の姿をとるといわれ、形は定まっていないようだ。
森に生えるキノコは、すべてKayeriの分身であるという。
雨が降ると現われ、晴れると姿を隠す。牛を好んで食べる。
